2012 - 52 Week Project : Week 4

Week 4 - Well Week 4's image was taken while people were still looking at my Week 3 shot. I did keep an open mind (and eye) for another image throughout the week back I keep coming back to this image of Sarah, a fellow photographer, at our abandoned house shoot last Sunday.

We ventured out in the cold and the snow and found an abandoned house to walk around and photograph. It was a great way to spend a couple of hours. I played with some ideas I had and will post the rest of the images to my website later this weekend for you to check out. As I was completing some ideas I had in the basement I saw Sarah doing some self-portrait work and just saw the light through the broken windows, the dirt floor, the makeshift railings of a makeshift bed and it came together - Abandoned.

Hope you like Week 4. I am really enjoying my project, I find it challenging and most weeks I am deciding between images to post, so it is doing its purpose and getting me 'out there' to shoot.

Week 3 made me promise that there will be no snow photo so I was stuck looking around the inside for something to shoot. I came across one of my favorite hibernation projects, reading and captured this library-esque photo. So, there you have it!

2012 - 52 Week Project : Week 2

Week 2 of my 52 week project brought snow and absolutely no motivation to go and shoot. I have disliked winter and snow for as long as I can remember. I know it's beautiful but it is also cold and messy and cold. I know I said cold twice but that just tells my dislike for it. That being said, the whole point of a 52 week project was to force me to get out and shoot even when I am not in the mood.

Having 4 children begging for snow since Thanksgiving took the edge of the snow arriving and so I followed them around and took pictures of them playing in the snow, shoveling and some of the surrounding snow events. Nothing jumped out at me until I saw a swing set, sitting all alone, untouched, sad and alone, waiting for Spring. That tire swing was ME. Cold, alone, covered in snow and impatiently waiting for Spring.......and so became my 2012-52 Week Project, Week 2 submission.

Amanda and Phil Engagement

Amanda White and Phil Picard are from Wisconsin but now they both live in Kingman, Arizona. Phil contacted me to do engagement photos and talk about his wedding. We planned on an after Christmas meeting and snow bound photos. Well, Wisconsin being Wisconsin, the weather didn't cooperate and we ended up with some awesome, non-snowy photos.

The photos at Grand Geneva Resort are special because that is where our bride and groom worked, apparently Phil had more on his mind than working.

Phil is a full time paramedic and Amanda teaches high school in Kingman. I am really looking forward to their Summer 2012 Lake Geneva wedding.

2012 - 52 Week Project : Week 1

I started the New Year asking for suggestions for a project, something personal, that would make me shoot even when I was more than happy to sit on the couch and do nothing. I came up with, after help, the idea of a non-assigned 52 week project. This means that once a week I will submit an image to my project. This week it was a task to go seek an image, I am sure there will be weeks where I will sitting at home shuffling through images deciding which one to post. Stick around, this may be fun!

Week 1's image is titled 'Milwaukee scene through a clock face'. The image jumped out at me while I was planning a totally different shot, and way more predictable Milwaukee shot I may add, this image, through the clock face, reminded me of Back to the Future and the Doc at the clock tower before Marty goes back to the future. What can I say? I'm a nerd!

I can't wait to see what inspires me in week 2.

Hansen Family - Dec 2011

Dave Hansen had his family in town for Christmas and he wanted a group photo. He has 3 sisters (I'm guessing they dressed him as a girl once or twice, lol) and their spouses and children in town. We had a chilly but nice day for photos and went to a local park. The family from Texas were a little cold, the family from Michigan seemed right at home. We did the group photo with mom and then some of just the children, then the grandchildren and finished with some individual family shots.

A new year, a new adventure awaits me!

Happy New Year!

I know I am a little early but I will gone the next couple of days hunting at my brother's place. Nothing like ringing in the New Year with a rifle in your hand doing a little shooting of a different kind!

Anyways, this is a positive post. I am so excited for my 2012 year, both personally and professionally. I have some weddings booked already and after a month break I am so ready to find cute Brides and handsome Grooms to photograph as they celebrate their special day. I have weddings booked in the Rock County area but I am especially excited for my July booking in beautiful Lake Geneva and my September wedding, for my very good friends Jon and Bethany, in Door County, Wisconsin. Tom has booked already and I am hoping for a great year in the wedding field.

I have a model shoot set for early January and am looking to explore my creative side in the studio setting again. I have so many ideas for when the weather breaks in the Spring!

On the personal side I will be taking the camera and Harley to Sturgis in August for my first trip there and I cannot wait to 'people watch' and ride the sights in South Dakota. I am sure I will need some more cards for the camera that week.

Fall brings a trip bear hunting in Minnesota with my best friends, my second adopted dad and my brother. I am sure being up there again that my camera will be making the trip again.

Couple all that with Senior portrait sessions, my weekly project and just following my four babies around on their adventures and I am sure I will have an amazing year to capture.

Again, I have the greatest friends in the world, you have stood by me personally this year, and carried me professionally, be it at the firehouse or on weddings when I needed it. I hope you waited through it all to see the new, improved, motivated and 'happier' Mike that has emerged.

The Cullen Family Christmas Letter - 2011 Edition

Greetings and Merry Christmas,

Firstly I apologize for the format of the letter this year. Frankly I am surprised I managed to get Christmas Cards mailed out before the big day.

Well, for those close to me already know, 2011 had many, many changes in store for me. We are talking major life changes and for most of the year I was pretty convinced that the light at the end of the tunnel was a freight train. Before I tell you about the year I wanted to thank each and every one of my friends that stood by me, offered support, a drink, a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen, a hug and a kiss, offers of couches and spare rooms, everything that I couldn't imagine and more. This divorce surprised me and the events of this past couple of years make me wonder if I even knew who I married, but I have no doubt what amazing friends I have. Thank you, every single one of you. I thank God that you were there through my most difficult time. I smile every day now because I have made it through this mess and I have my children and my health and am discovering that I am much, much happier these past 3 months than I have been in 2 years!

OK, to better things, My wedding business is booming. I had some awesome weddings this year and Tom and I had our best/busiest year ever. Thank you Tom for making this side job so much fun for me. My senior portraits and family portraits have been going well too and I have started shooting model portfolios again after a short break. I am so excited for 2012. The Fire Department has been so-so this year for us all. I work with the greatest bunch of people in the world but changes in state and city policy, cuts, lack of support from the people that hired us has left us all wondering what we are doing here anymore. This poor morale at the firehouse has made me love my photography even more, an escape from the day to day stress. This too shall pass I guess, the bad morale, not the love for photography. LOL.

Even during my nasty year I had some amazing times with my children, we went to baseball games, to fairs, a couple of trips to the Wilderness and to see cousins and ride horses. Most recently we visited Milwaukee and started our Christmas Holiday by seeing the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the kids LOVED the show and my boys have been asking to hear the music every day since.

Kirsten, my oldest, is 15 now, she has been amazing. She is a Black Belt and has started teaching at her martial arts studio with the instructor. She is heavily involved in her church and youth group and has some amazing 'mission trip' planned for next year. I am so proud of my baby girl who is growing up to be an amazing, beautiful, strong young woman.

Brooke is 9 years old and her big news was becoming the youngest Black Belt that Janesville has ever promoted. She took her test in November and is a junior Black Belt. She has worked so hard and , because of her age, has watched people she helped learn their forms promote before her. She waited patiently for her time and (I think) had so much fun during her weekend. Brooke is working heard at school and is often seen reading, with a big book in her hands. Brooke is a huge helper around the house and I am constantly being told what an amazingly sweet young lady she is.

Connor is 6 years old (almost 7) and has started cooking this year. Connor is a great helper for me, he cleans, helps with laundry and is always asking 'what he can do for me?'. Connor is continuing his martial arts training and is getting stronger every day. Connor's special talent is his art, which I think he gets from my mom, he loves drawing pictures for me and everyone else. He is my sweet 'mini-me'.

My youngest, Joshua, isn't young anymore, just ask him! He turned 5 in August and is just a bundle of energy. He wakes up slowly every morning then has a permanent smile on his face all day long. He tries so hard at everything he does. He is learning to write and wants to write his name and letters on everything, he loves to color and his favorite game is tic-tac-toe with dad. His goal for next year is to learn his two-wheeler. We tried before the cold but I think next Spring we will have it nailed. Joshua is also continuing his martial arts training and he is such a perfect young man. If you look through the years photos you will notice that he shed 10 lbs of hair sometime over the summer changing his appearance substantially. My Joshua is always full of hugs and kisses for me.

This year was a roller coaster for my family, a lot of downs but ups as well. I can only imagine what the year was like on my children and I cringe, but in the past 3 months, as things return to a new normal for us, I think they are really happy and stable once again. 2012 is going to be AMAZING!

Heim Wedding

Melissa Polich and Jeff Heim We married in Beloit on Oct 29th. They were married at First Congregational Church by the park in downtown Beloit. The church was beautiful as was our bride.

Jeff and Melissa are friends of mine so my morning started out hanging with the girls getting their hair done and drinking some pretty amazing coffee. I even talked one of the bridesmaids into letting me in on her Cubs season tickets when my White Sox go to the North Side. So, the morning was awesome.

Melissa was an amazingly relaxed bride. She went with the day, planning done, and (I think) had an amazing stress-free wedding. I wonder if when people make stress that the day gets more stressful? Well, either way, Melissa was a joy to be around for her wedding day.

We had some ceremony shots and then we chose to go to Rotary Gardens and walked around there before heading to the Pontiac Reception Center for dinner and dance.

Baby Easton Christmas Photos

Steven Senior Portraits

Steven will be a 2012 graduate of Turner High School in Beloit. Steven's grandmother contacted me and wanted to spend an hour or so walking down along the river front with Steven. Steven was awesome, full of smiles that I usually have to pry out of shy seniors, and willingness to try all kinds of poses and locations.

Steven brought a couple of favorite outfits and we had an awesome time walking around and taking photos.

Steven is studying hard and finishing high school very strong. Congratulations Class of 2012, Steven.

Easton is 3 1/2 months old!

Easton's mom, Amy Lewis, asked me to take Easton's 3 month photos. Her regular baby photographer was booked and I had some weekday time available. I explained how most of my models and seniors are able to follow basic posing commands and how I expected the same of Easton.....well, you can see by the last photo how THAT turned out.

We had a beautiful fall day at Big Hill Park in Beloit and we found a leaf pile with some color and added a Halloween pumpkin or two as background.

Even though 'Tooter', as mom calls him, didn't want to smile we got some great facial expressions and captured his 3 (and a half) month photos nicely.

Emily and Michael Schumaker

Emily Shoemaker and Michael Schumaker (same pronunciation, different spelling), were married in Janesville on the 1st day of October. The weather cooperated and we actually did formal photos outside, which our brides have been loving.

When I first met Emily for coffee, mmmmmm coffee (in my best Homer Simpson voice), she laughed when she said she was keeping the same last name, she just had to spell it differently. I was impressed, but would have been more so if she had found a husband and her last name was Wojechieski-Schnetzel, giggle, giggle.

Emily and Michael chose a ceremony and formal only package from us and we captured some great images at the church. It was the first time I had a wedding in this church and the pastor was every easy to work with and she actually showed me some awesome history and renovations in this beautiful church.

Emily was a beautiful bride, her niece (the flower girl in the photos) was absolutely adorable. I know these two will be amazingly happy together.

Hannah and Brad Davis Wedding

Hannah Thompson and Brad Davis were married at Rotary Gardens in Janesville on yet another beautiful Wisconsin day!

The cool thing about this story is that I last saw Hannah for her Senior Portraits a couple of years back. Hannah had called me and told me she was getting married, WOW, how time flies, and she told me how awesome her life is now. I am so happy to hear how life works out after people graduate.

The day was awesome, the setting perfect and we spent some time walking around the Gardens taking photos. The reception was great and, as you see, the bride and groom had perfected the dipping kiss by dance time.

Mandy and Travis McAfee Wedding

Mandy Jensen and Travis McAfee were married in Milton on a beautiful sunny day. Mandy and Travis are both firefighter/EMT's with the Milton Fire Department and wanted some after photos done there with the new tower-ladder.

We had an amazing day. The bride was nervous to start the day but once the 'I Do's' were over she was relaxed and the real smiles came out. We stopped by Travis' dad's house and used their amazing yard/garden to take the formal photos and some solo images of the couple. The reception was great and the day was perfect for Mandy and Travis.

Dustin is a 2012 Senior at Beloit Memorial High School. Dustin has been a wrestler through high school and plans to wrestle in college.

Dustin won this photographer over when he asked if he could wear his White Sox hat in some of hi photos. GO SOX! :-)

Pierce Senior Photos

Pierce Andrews is a Senior at Beloit Memorial High School. He is a wrestler and plays football. Pierce's mom wanted a few photos with his cousin as they have been together in photos since they were young.

Pierce wanted some riverfront photos and then some downtown shots so that is what we did. We spent an hour walking around and had a great hour or so.

Stephen and Emilie Godlewski

So the Sunday after the rainstorm turned out to be absolutely wonderful in the State-line area, and it found Tom and I shooting an outdoor wedding on the bank of the Rock River. The day was amazing, the setting was amazing and Emilie and Stephen looked great!

The reception was fun, and unique as they had a grill, I just had to get a photo of that, and the dancing was held outside on the deck of the club.

We walked the happy couple down the road at dusk so we could play with some photos, we solved the NFL crisis and talked motorcycles on the short walk and captured some great images while we were there. Yes, work did get accomplished.

All this and I didn't even mention the chocolate fountain they had at the reception. It smelled HEAVENLY!

Matt and Kate Messer Wedding

If my last bride Katie won the award for least-stressed bride then this bride Kate wins the award for most-patient bride. Let me elaborate;

Kate and Matt were married on a beautiful hot and humid day in Polo, IL. We had a great ceremony in a cute church and ran to White Pines State Park for some after shots. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots to shoot after weddings in this area of Illinois.

The reception was fun and we captured some awesome images, this is where I get to the part about Kate being patient, I came home and uploaded my images, burned my master disc and copied to my external hard drive. I have always been paranoid about backing up my weddings as soon as I get home. All well. I started editing and once finished I was preparing to upload to my website and Kate had e-mailed to check on my progress and I told her I was preparing to upload. That is when the hard drive crashed, stupid Toshiba piece of crap, LOL.

I called Kate the next morning, starting with "your photos are safe but........", expecting an angry, frustrated or upset answer I was surprised when Kate told me that she was sorry that happened, she would wait patiently for the computer to come back and for her photos and then followed up with telling me that if I was closer we could go out drinking to drown my misery. Wow! I was smiling after delivering less than happy news, Thanks Kate!

Fast-forward a couple of weeks and I have uploaded and delivered her photos and she surprises me again by telling me I made her last for school as she was checking out the photos. I was so happy she liked them after all her waiting!

Jason and Katie Allen Wedding

Katie Hinds and Jason Allen had planned a beautiful outdoor wedding, as the day crept closer the weather looked less likely to cooperate. I am usually one that laughs at weather predictions as the guys on TV seem to guess and are more often wrong than spot on, however this time they were right and I woke Saturday morning to a torrential downpour that didn't seem to send any signs of stopping. Lucky for me Katie was the total opposite of a stressed-out bride. She smiled when I saw her and shrugged her shoulders and told me about her back-up plan and the church. Cool.

We ended up having a very fun, relaxing ceremony and reception. We even stopped by their local bar for a few drinks after photos and before guests arrived at the reception hall.

All in all the day went with very few issues and Katie wins, if I had one, the least stressed bride award for 2011.

Karissa Senior Photos

Karissa will be a graduate of Marshall High School, just outside Madison. Karissa called and suggested doing something different for her senior portraits. She said she didn't want what everyone else in the school had. I offered her a couple of sites down by me and she counter-suggested going towards Lake Michigan and Kenosha beach, sounds like fun I said, and we planned a day.

The day was awesome, the temperature and sky were nice. We spent an hour or so walking up and down and around the beach area and got some really unique and cool images for her senior photos.

Denny and Ariana Lester Wedding

Ariana Johnson and Dennis Lester were married on a beautiful day at the Clock Tower Resort in Rockford. The air conditioning was amazing and we appreciated it that day.

Ariana was a very easy bride to work with, she was intent on having and amazingly fun day and she managed that perfectly. Her wedding dress had an antique look to it and was one of the most amazing dresses I have seen.

The ceremony was nice with some great shots from the balcony and behind the wedding party.

We then went downtown Cherry Valley and to the railroad tracks for some other shots.

I posted the photos last night and she messaged me and thanked me before I could email and tell her they were up, so I am very grateful for a very happy bride.

Miller Family Portrait

Mike Miller and his family won a family portrait gift certificate at the Beloit Firefighters Honor Guard bowling tournament this past February. We found day that worked for the whole family between hockey practice and college and sat down for the shoot. We chose a couple of different locations and these are what we came up with.

After the shoot Karen (Mike's wife) had some pulled beef sandwiches for us. Yummy, awesome shoot.

Eberdt 50 year Anniversary

The Eberdt's celebrated 50 years of marital bliss and wanted to celebrate by updating the family photo album. I stopped over with my 6 year old (Connor) assistant in tow. David was great taking the time to show my little man his awesome train set and collection in the basement, years and years doing that hobby and what an awesome set.

We went to the back yard of their beautiful home and shot the whole family and the separate families. Shaun is a firefighter, his wife Krista a nurse, I actually shot Krista's daughter (Hannah) senior photos a couple of years back. David's other child, Shelly is a nurse and her hubby Bill, a cop but we don't hold that against him (I'm kidding). I shot their son's senior photos last year (David).

Jessie and Clay Coffey Wedding

Jessie and Clay Coffey had one of the funnest wedding parties I have been involved with. I was actually telling a friend today that in all the weddings I have photographed I had been very lucky and had a bunch of awesome brides and bridal parties, but the Coffey wedding took it all to another level.
To start with Kelly Peppin (Price) was a bridesmaid and we shot her wedding 1 month after Jessie's (and Jessie was Matron of Honor for Kelly) and then we add the rest of the characters, a photographer from South Dakota that has since shared her favorite photo spots there, and most of the guys were volunteer firefighters so I found plenty to chat with them about. All in all a great location, a great day and a lot of fun.

Biddick Wedding

Whitney Gabioud and Matt Biddick were married on the beach on Castle Rock Lake in Wisconsin. Whitney was taken to the ceremony on a pontoon boat and walked down a sandy isle to Matt who was waiting by the shoreline. The day was slightly overcast and a little chilly but the ceremony was unique and probably one of the coolest weddings I have been able to photograph.

After formal photographs on the beach Matt and Whitney had a small mingle session and drinks at the tiki bar before going inside to a more formal reception.

Katie and Tim Klawonn Wedding

Katie Elland and Tim Klawonn were married in Beloit on June 4th. Once again we started the day watching the skies, wondering if we would be dodging storms for outdoor photos, but we ended up with a magnificent day.
We chose outdoor shots for formals and stopped out at Beckman Mill, just outside Beloit, for some wedding party shots.
The reception was at the Beloit Inn where the bride and groom and father of the bride danced the night away. I threatened to send some of his dancing photos to his work but have held off on doing that, LOL.

Bridget Northrop and Anthony Graulich Wedding

Bridget Northrop and Anthony Graulich were married May 21st, 2011 at Rotary Gardens in Janesville. I swear I haven't watched the weather this much in years. Thank God for my android phone, visible radar, a quick prayer and we ended up with clouds clearing and a beautiful, although warm, Spring day for the wedding ceremony.

We stayed at Rotary Gardens for photos, obviously and then took the party bus to a couple of stops before ending up at the Armory in Janesville for the reception. What a great venue, my first time shooting in there. Excellent space and light was OK too.

Congrats Bridget and Anthony. They have requested a password protected gallery, but trust me, there are some awesome images on there :-)

Gracyalny-Atkinson Wedding

Sam Gracyalny and Matt Atkinson were married May 7th 2011 at OLA church in Beloit. Sam and Matt were awesome to work with, so relaxed and stress free. We had a nice day, a little rain but nothing major, and we even managed to stop at Matt's farm for some photos.

The reception was in Clinton where I got a photo of the largest cup cake in the world.

AKF Flying Dragons of McHenry, IL

I was asked to come down to AKF Flying Dragons at McHenry, IL for a group photo and some individual shots for their new website (HERE). The school is owned and classes taught by Head Master Wayne Steinmetz and Master Tina Curtis.

Kyuki-Do is a Korean martial art combining elements of Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Jujitsu, Hakido and Karate.

On a personal note I have four children training in this martial art with Kirsten holding a black belt, Brooke testing for black belt this fall, Connor is a blue belt and Joshua as a yellow stripe.

Martial Arts Tournament

These are from the Spring Kyuki-Do Tournament held in the Wisconsin Dells. Brooke walked away with 3 1st place trophies (Judo/Jujitsu, Forms and Weapons), Connor walked away with 3 - 3rd place trophies (Judo/Jujitsu, Forms and Sparring), Kirsten got a participation in Weapons and a 3rd in forms.

Kristi Polglaze and Brian Grace

This was a pre-wedding, wedding. Let me explain. Kristi is from Beloit and Brian is from Texas. Kristi and Brian were already getting married in Houston with a ceremony the first weekend in April. They decided to put together a vow ceremony and reception for all the Wisconsin family that won't make the trip, and so they came up here to share their vows the week before the big day.

The ceremony and reception were at the Rotary Center in Beloit. The weather was a little colder than Brian was used to, but the sky was perfect for photos.

The ceremony was very nice and the reception and dancing was a lot of fun too. Brian and Kristi were awesome people to do photos for, they suggested ideas, and didn't complain when I made them stand outside in the cold. That is all I care about, you may be freezing but I will get my shot........I am, of course, kidding, frozen brides do not make for cute photos.

Katie and Tim Engagement

So I showed up for the engagement shoot for Katie and Tim and started talking cars with Tim, I am sure Katie hated us. Tim is a mechanic and a gear head and guided me to his shop to get some work done on my Jaguar. Thanks Tim, you are a lifesaver, well, a car-saver, or would that be a Jag-saver?

Katie and Tim are planning an June wedding and definitely plan on stopping out to the mill for some wedding day shots.

Tim and Katie were easy to work with, needed very little direction and had some awesome original ideas for their own shoot. I am looking forward to their wedding, it should be a good day.

Samantha and Matt Engagement

FIRE - BDN front page - again :-)

This fire was on the night of the Honor Guard Bowling Fundraiser. The fire was Turtle FD's and they requested help from the City of Beloit, Town of Beloit, South Beloit, Clinton, Sharon, Janesville and probably others that I have forgotten.

The page had gone out and I stopped by there to get some photos before heading to the fundraiser. The last photo ran on the front page of Monday's paper. I like getting the fron page with really cool fire photos.

Thankfully no-one was hurt in this garage fire that spread to the house. It was a total loss for the family though.

The top photo is the clean-up from a garage fire on Grant Street in Beloit. Pictured are Brian Kiesow and Mike Agate. The guys had a great knockdown and prevented damage to the house. This made page 3 of the paper.

The bottom photo made the inside of the paper, in color and was from the Beloit Firefighters Honor Guard bowling fundraiser. Michelle Smith (wife of Beloit Lt. Scott Smith) made the afghan rug in just a month. This is her 3rd afghan she has made by hand and donated to the Honor Guard. Michelle, you are awesome, great job. I just wish I could win one =)

Gander-Hall Wedding

Katie Gander and Aaron Hall were married in Beloit on Feb 26th, 2011. Katie was hoping for a fresh light snow and even though it was cold, we had the opportunity to get some cool photos.

Katie is an RN at Beloit ER and Aaron is a Beloit Police Officer so the one shot we wanted to do was the squad car outside the ER. So we did. Unfortunately we had to wash the squad car off before using it. lol.

My babies get to break 'Birthday Boards' at AKF Martial Arts in Janesville. Connor and Brooke both chose side kicks to break their boards. That would be Master Holden bracing the board. Brooke is now a black stripe (testing for black belt in November) and Connor is a blue stripe. Happy birthday kiddies.

Hi again all,

Glad you are still checking my blog. I find myself apologizing again for not keeping up with this. In my defense I have been out saving the world from evil with my other superhero friends.......oh wait, nope, that was a movie I just watched. I have actually been traveling the country taking on food challenges from local restaurants for a TV show........ah, good point, that is Adam on Man Vs. Food. LOL.

I have been busy working, hibernating from the snow and raising my children. No good excuses.

I have already shot my first 2011 wedding and had 2 engagement sessions. I am booking weddings into 2012 and Senior Portraits are lining up for the summer. Contact me for your session.

Family photo shoot - Dec 2010. The whole family were together for a Christmas gathering so we went over and shot individuals and family shots. Great time, all the kids behaved (probably scared that Santa would see them if they didn't).

Diana and Alex Gomez Wedding

Alex and Diana Gomez were married in a wonderfully sunny and warm day at Midway Village in Rockford. The church is in the village and is modeled after a single room church house of yesteryear. The church had wooden pews and shooting there was like stepping back in time. Very cool to shoot there.

Both Alex and Diana wanted to spend time walking around the village and create wonderful images.

I am torn between the 5 images selected her as to my favorite. You pick and let me know. I like them all.

Annette and Mark Price Wedding

Annette and Mark Price were married in Rockford in a beautiful (read nicely lit) church. The amazing part was Annette's parents had been married in that same church a few years before them.

Annette and Mark had already scoped out some cool photo spots, including a railroad (I love railroads) and the brewery sign so my work was already done. Annette's mom is a fantastic photographer and her choosing me to capture her daughter's special day was an honor in and of itself.

The last few photos are in and around Rockford College, where they had the reception. The day was windy, cool but sunny and blue skies, a beautiful fall day for a wedding.

Krause Family Portraits

You may recognize this couple as I shot their wedding back in May. Amanda is pregnant and she and Zack are patiently awaiting a May 2011 arrival.

This was a family portrait session and birthday photos for little miss cutie in pink! A promise to visit the park was made to ensure a happy smile and peaceful disposition. It seemed to work as a meltdown was only presented when we decided to take mom and dad away for some couple shots.

Kate Terry and Matt Messer Engagement Photos

Kate Terry and Matt Messer spent an hour walking around beautiful Beckman Mill outside of Beloit to capture some of their engagement photos. They plan a July 30, 2011 wedding and have already pre-warned me that they both think they take lousy photos. I disagree, but who the heck am I anyway? just the photographer.
Kate and Matt are both middle school teachers in Polo, IL. They teach at different schools a few minutes apart.
I am really looking forward to their wedding and the stop afterward, as it gives me another opportunity to shoot at White Pines State Park with a beautiful river setting for the wedding party to try and not fall in to.

David Senior Photos

David is a 2011 Senior at Janesville Parker High School. He plays hockey and runs track and cross country. David is thinking of pursuing a four year degree at a state school. David mentioned wanting to go into firefighting as a career.

David tells me that this years Janesville Co-op hockey team should be rather good, keep an eye on these guys, they may end up at state.

We met during the evening at David's house and shot for an hour or so during the sunset and got some pretty good photos.

Ashley's Senior Portraits

Ashley is a 2011 Senior at Orfordville Parkview High School. I spent about 90 minutes with Ashley at her home shooting these photos. It was warm enough for me to be hot in a polo shirt so you can feel what Ashley felt like in sweaters and long sleeves.

Ashley is planning on going to college for art/painting/drawing. The last photo is one with all her artwork. She specializes in cat art and has some amazing talent.

Ashley is a cheerleader for the Vikings and tells me that cheering for them isn't bad, they apparently seem to win their home games =)

Bobby's Senior Photos

Bobby is a 2011 senior at Janesville Parker High School. If you look back a while I shot both of Bobby's twin sisters. So this is the whole family.

Unlike his sisters, Bobby only agreed to get senior photos because his mom wanted them. Ah well, he showed up and was awesome to work with, patient, talkative and had some great input.

McKearn Wedding

Brooke and mike McKearn were married in Beloit last month. Brooke had a simple plan for the day - be stress free. She did an awesome job of being the stress-free bride, nothing phased her. she went with the flow and ended up having a great day. The weather held and that was wonderful as we had a gathering by the river for the reception. I posted Brooke's photos a few days back, you can see the rest HERE, and she called me right away and told me that she loved them. I told her that her stress-free attitude and easy smile made the day that much easier to capture. Brooke was a beautiful bride and deserved a day as nice as she had.

Allayna - 1 Year Portraits

Allayna just turned 1 years old. Allayna's mom called me for her photos and asked where we should go so I asked a few questions about her little girl and we discovered that Allayna loves to crawl, walk and climb. We settled on outdoor photos and met at Palmer Park in Janesville. I spent about an hour walking, crawling and chasing Allayna around and she smiled and giggled the whole time. Wow, that child is very happy. We got some great images and I put together a couple of collages as examples of what we can do.

Adams Wedding

Nathan Adams and Tana Hoffman were married at Rotary Gardens in Janesville on a beautiful Friday night this June. The weather held out as rain had threatened for the whole week but in the end we had a warm, but wonderful day. The ceremony was performed by their friend, a minister and they had the reception on site. Nate and Tana had a wonderful day, shared by many friends and family and I am sure they will have a great rest of their life together.

Foerder Engagement

Bob Foerder and Kelly Sheehan are planning a September 2010 wedding. I spent Father's Day (and Kelly's birthday) on Kelly's parents property outside Huntley, IL. The weather was hot and sticky and the bugs chased us around but we managed to stop and get some good shots. They seemed to have fun and it was great meeting Bob and Kelly. The Flanagan Twins

Kieran and Rowan came out for their first photo shoot this June. I love kids and I also know how difficult kid photo shoots can be so I recruited my trusted assistant/baby girl, Kirsten, to come with me. Kirsten has first hand knowledge of these twins as she babysits them on occasion. It worked wonderfully with momma Flanagan and Kirsten playing 'coo-coo, look at the camera' and the girls playing, 'not on your life'. Still, I giggled and we ran around watching them play in the sand, and the mud and kept them from swimming in the pond.

In hindsight, I think it worked better and we had better opportunities just following the kids around for an hour and a half. The posed shots where the kids are forced smiling are so overdone, or at least that is my story. I had one twin smiling and the other glaring at me on occasion, you'll see that photo, but then they would both look so cute at times. They have great, wonderful personalities that are just beginning to develop. Anyone that looks at twins and tells you, "I can't tell them apart", obviously hasn't spent any time with them. Kieran and Rowan both have very distinct expressions, movements and goals for the day, or hour. You can tell this is the first photo of Kieran, or is it Rowan - heh heh heh!

The first two photos made the front page of the newspaper.

Sad situation for those involved. Drive carefully and, although a cause has not yet been released by the State Patrol, the roads were dry and the skies were clear so please, please, please put your cellphones, MP3 players, newspapers, books, make-up and food away and concentrate on the few thousand pounds of metal that you are in control of, because the life you end up taking may not be your own.

Amanda Jensen and Travis McAfee Engagement Photos

Amanda and Travis are set to be married next Spring (2011). We waited, and waited, and waited for nice weather to finally hit the State-line area and when we had a halfway decent day we headed over to Rotary Gardens in Janesville. We walked around and took the photos wherever we stopped. The wedding planning is going well and I, of course, put my 2 cents in regarding photos.......you see both Mandy and Travis are paid-on-call firefighters with Milton (WI) Fire Dept. They were unsure on whether to stop there and get wedding day photos because they are sure they will take some friendly razzing from the rest of the crew. I sided with the fact that I would love to take photos of a bride and groom on the firetruck, something I have done 2 other times, so I pushed for this and think we may be making a stop on their wedding day for the truck shot. Hey, Milton Fire peeps, make sure you wash and wax that truck for Mandy so her beautiful dress stays beautiful.....otherwise she may smack you =)

Looking forward to their wedding day, we should have a great time with a bride and groom that seem to like having their photo taken, which is always a plus.

That being said; they did tell me that they hardly had any nice photos of themselves before the engagement shoot.

Green County (Monroe) EMS Group Photo - 2010 edition.

Green County EMS is an EMT-Intermediate 99 service that has been serving the Monroe and surrounding area since 1974.

SWAT - Medic Training - April 2010

April 2010 - Beloit Police Training in Wisconsin. The BPD SWAT team are a regional response team and can be deployed anywhere in the State for a call-up. The Wisconsin Army will come and get the team on their really cool Blackhawk helicopters. The ride on these awesome machines was so cool. It was smooth and actually better than the van ride up to training.

There are more training photos on www.BeloitPhoto.com - the photos are used after asking permission from our great 4-person Army crew to take photos of their chopper (we didn't want to be shot as spies - LOL) - Our crew had just come back from overseas and, as we told them, they probably have one of the coolest jobs in the world. Thanks to all the service men and women overseas for doing their jobs. Getting a close up look at some of your tools and getting a ride in the chopper was one of the neatest experiences I had.

Zack and Amanda Krause Wedding

Zack and Amanda Krause were married at Central Christian Church in Beloit in April 2010. Amanda called me and told me that her and Zach had originally planned to be married in Punta Cana and come back and do a reception. She told me that plans had changed and she was getting married in town before the trip so family could be there. Amanda, with the help of her friends, put together a wedding in about 6 weeks. I was available and happy to capture their wonderful day. She has some great photos of her daughter in the images online (www.Beloitphoto.com) and I actually got her little girl, Jade, to smile once or twice.

The first 2 images of the railroad tracks were a last minute decision. We had wanted to stop after formals and before their reception but time got the better of us. As we were driving we stopped at the tracks and got the wonderful blue sky in the pics. I was really happy with this quick stop we made.

Shane and Mary Wedding Reception

April 2010 - Mary and Shane Flavin were married in February of this year in beautiful, sunny Jamaica. They decided to hold a reception when they returned for their friends and family that were not able to attend the wedding. They chose the Pontiac Convention Center in Janesville and had dinner and a DJ.

Mary called me for an evening photo shoot and I was happy to help her out. I have known Mary for quite a while so this was a fun event to shoot. Beloit Firefighters Honor Guard - Bowling Fundraiser 2010

The Beloit Firefighters Honor Guard have an annual bowling fundraiser held at Viking Lanes in South Beloit. As a member of this Honor Guard I offered my services for photos. The photos we taken throughout the evening.

The first photo is of Master of Ceremonies, Scott Smith. The BFD quilt behind him was hand made by his wonderful wife, Michelle. It took her about 4 months work and is the red twin to the white one she made for us last year. The quilt auction netted approx $500 for the Honor Guard.

Photo #2 is Holly Ford, Photo #3 is Holly Flanagan and Jennifer Murray, Photo #4 is Jeremy Flanagan, scary as all heck in his too-tight man shirt that he won and finally Photo#5 is the Robson family.

Drew Anderson and Ashley Minnick were married on March 13th in Beloit. We started the day at the hair salon and the ceremony at the church was beautiful. The reception was held at the Pontiac Convention Center in Janesville. The day was perfect, not too cold, no rain, no snow (which is always a concern in Wisconsin), everyone was on time and it appeared, by the end of the evening, that everyone had a great time.

Drew is a firefighter with South Beloit, IL. Fire Department and Ashley works at Beloit Memorial Hospital in patient registration. They followed their busy day with a week long honeymoon.

These are a couple of Save the Date designs for Kari and Charlie. They will be getting full engagement photos in the Spring and will be getting married at Anderson Gardens in the fall.

In other news, I had a wedding two weekends ago, watch for pics soon, and am now helping teach a beginning photography class with my buddy, Tom, on Saturday mornings in Beloit. The really cool thing is my daughter, Kirsten, is taking the class and learning photography.

It is finally getting nice out, call me for engagement, wedding, family or senior photos.

Everyone goes through it - Major League Baseball batters and pitchers, football quarterbacks, even some Winter Olympians so I shouldn't feel bad that the 1st 40+ days of the year found me in somewhat of a photography slump.

I have no idea when it started, sometime after Christmas, I think. I just haven't picked up the camera. That is, at least good to say, that the slump was motivation, not product, meaning I haven't been putting out a bad product, I just haven't put out a product. I am up to date on all scheduled bookings, photos delivered and winter is a slow time for bookings anyway. I just have been in a winter "funk" - looking outside I don't see the "beauty" that people that don't live with all this white stuff manage to see and say about snow. "awww, it's beautiful, it's a winter wonderland" - disgusting, nasty words. I don't see that! I can tolerate snow, and even want to photography it for the first 48 hours it is on the ground and then......nothing......I just sit at home, camera on the shelf, waiting until Spring.

That being said, I have also neglected this blog, nothing shot, so nothing to post. I did spend a productive morning touching base with my next wedding (just over 2 weeks away) and booked a Senior Portrait session and a Family Portrait sitting. Maybe the "funk" is over for this year. I smile when I think that pitchers and catchers report to Spring training in Arizona in 3 days, the unofficial start of baseball season and Spring! Ah, Arizona, how warm you seem :-)

I will be back on here soon, way sooner that another 40+ days :-)

Happy New Year - Here is to a GREAT 2010!

I am so cold and sick of snow so I have decided to start the year off with warm thoughts and dreams of baseball. This is a 2009 photo at US Cellular Field that I aged to look like an old style image for my wife's "Americana" themed room. I LOVE the way this shot turned out.

Amanda and Greg Noha Wedding

Amanda Genna and Greg Noha were married on Nov 7, 2009 - my last wedding for the year. Amanda and Greg live just outside of Chicago and were married at Central Christian Church in Beloit. We stopped by the riverfront in Beloit for some after ceremony photos but the light was getting away from us so the wedding party 'adjourned' to Suds O'Hanahans - downtown Beloit for a few beverages. We, of course, got photos there.

The reception was at the newly remodelled Eclipse Center in Beloit and was fantastic. An awesome day for a great couple.

Amanda and Greg had their photos and release about a month later and their photos were up at www.Beloitphoto.com for family and friends to see.

They are currently picking out photos for their coffee table press-printed book and they will be getting that soon.

Sparks Family Photos

Chris is one of my best friends so when he asked for his family Christmas photo I was more than ready to take his money :-)

We had spent the weekend up in Iola (by Stevens Point for those of you that don't know - we didn't until he moved there) hunting, frying Turkey, having a few beers and spending quality time and Sparky asked me to bring my camera. I did.

The kids, Michaeh, Brianna, Allison and Nicholas were awesome, if not a tad cold and posed nicely. This was a great park in Waupaca. I may have to branch out to Senior Portraits in that area as they have nice locations to shoot......and it's an excuse to see my friends.

Drew and Ashley Engagement

Drew Anderson and Ashley Minnick are getting married next March 13th. Drew is a firefighter with South Beloit and Ashley works at Beloit Hospital. Ashley called me for wedding photos and we set up an engagement session at their home. I arrived and we decided it was too nice of a day not to shoot outdoors so we headed to Beckman Mill. We had a great time walking around and shooting for an hour. Drew and Ashley had some great ideas for photos and we got some awesome images. I am really looking forward to their wedding.

Faith is TWO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Faith is my youngest neice from my brother (Jason) - Faith turned 2 years old recently and Karen wanted some photos - the older 3 girls have school photos each year and Faith hasn't had a formal photo in a while so I took my photo stuff up to Dodgeville when I went hunting this past week. Faith was awesome for the whole weekend and was actually OK for the 20 minutes we had photos, although she was very wiggly :-)

A couple of days ago someone/a friend posted (on Facebook) that she had taken her child to the mall for photos, she said that she waited 45 minutes as they, the photographer, was running late and only got so-so pictures. This is disappointing as I know I do not do a great job of getting my name out there and advertising but because poor photo experiences may keep you from calling a professional for family photos in the future. I schedule around your/your child's schedule so we have the "best" time of day for photos. I schedule to come to your house so your child is already in a comfort level. I spend time to allow your child to get to know me so the photos turn out great. I never charge for poses or change of clothes so we can shoot as many as you want in the time you choose.

Miller Wedding

Heather (Francis) and Brian Miller are Police Officers with the City of Beloit and met there and became engaged there and were married this past November in a small ceremony at the La Casa Grande in Beloit. Heather had called me and put together a wedding, reception with photographer, food and DJ all in a matter of a few weeks. Heather and Brian had talked about getting married on an island or in Vegas but Heather was very pregnant and unable to fly (she had a 10lb beautiful baby boy a couple of weeks before this day), so they decided to be married in front of their friends in B-town.

The ceremony was wonderful, followed by good food and dancing all night. Photos are up at www.Beloitphoto.com including cute pics of Brady (the baby). The weather was questionable/read freezing cold so the outdoor photos were taken under duress (Heather complained wayyyyy less than Brian did!)

David is 1 years old

If you look back in my blog you will see that I had David's 5 months photos and his parents wedding in June. David is now 1 year and still smiles every time I look at him, what a happy child. We ran over to Beloit Station 3 where daddy is a firefighter and got photos of little David on a 1932 Pirsch - great time, good pics.

Brittany and Brandon Wells Wedding

Brittany and Brandon were married on October 3rd this year - the wedding was at a church in Marengo that Tom and I had shot a wedding in previously and liked. The morning had showers and some rain predicted but didn't stop the day from being fabulous.

We stopped a couple of places en-route to the reception for some photos, I really liked the way the umbrella shots came out - something different.

The reception was a blast with the families being divided between the Bears and the Packers - I like neither so I just watched, took photos and laughed......the brides father was given a green and yellow Packer shirt by the grooms father. The grooms father then watched as the bride danced with her father wearing a bright orange Bears jersey over her wedding gown, can't say I had seen that before.

Allie's Senior Photos

Allie is a senior (class of 2010) at South Milwaukee High School. Allie contacted me for senior portraits but told me she didn't want traditional photos. We chatted a while and she decided she wanted an urban look - walking around town, very casual, not much planning/scouting locations and see what we got.

We met, and shot, on a cool October Saturday in Milwaukee and found some neat places. I was cautious when I found an abandoned building as to what Allie would think - we both turned to each other and said "this place is cool" - this was a great senior shoot. We liked the same locations and had the same ideas. The waterfront was cool (as in temperature) but we got some good pics. Allie's goal was not to have the same photos as everyone else in her senior class - I think we achieved that goal.

Allie will be graduating next summer and is planning a career/going to Marquette University for Psychology - maybe the study of weird photographers is in her future, I could be her masters thesis. Allie is also a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and has so many trophies that she hasn't places to keep them all.

Kast Wedding

Brandon and Cara Kast were married at Koshkonong Mounds Country Club in September. Cara and Brandon had a great day with near perfect weather. It wasn't even that hot.

I started the day at Cara's Maid-of-honor's home to get final detail shots and then we went to the lake for photos.

The ceremony was held outside and was covered by my standard two photographer package from the front and back capturing every moment. We stayed for the reception getting some great shots indoors as well.

I was especially pleased with the reaction from the bridal party and the mom's after the sunset shots were taken. Definitely my favorite shots from the wedding.

Kim and Paul Engagement Photos

So there I was, minding my own business, and I fell backwards into an engagement shoot. A bridesmaid of a future wedding called me after the engagement shoot (that she also attended) and said I took some great images. She told me that friends of hers had a wedding planned for a few weeks and had a photographer but they hadn't done engagement shots. She asked if I would do and engagement session for Paul and Kim as a wedding present from her. I said I would be happy to and that is how I ended up in Fort Atkinson on a Sunday afternoon in September. Kim and Paul were awesome. We wandered around a park at Fort but were disappointed when we found their signature shot, the fountain, had been turned off.......so we headed to Koshkonong Mounds Country Club and shot some engagement shots there. We had a great session and ended up with great pics. I hope Kim and Paul had a great wedding and wish them all the best for their life together.

Froehlich-Bonk Wedding

Amybeth Froehlich and Chris Bonk were married at Rotary Gardens in Janesville, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I booked this wedding through a friend of mine and friend of the bride's. Their morning started cloudy skies and threatening rain for the first time that week, the weather held and we had a great ceremony in the Sunken Garden area of the Gardens.

The reception was held on site and we, obviously, didn't have to travel for photos.

Swat-Tactical Training at Volk Field

This past week I was at Volk Field, by Camp Douglas in Wisconsin with the Beloit Police Tactical (SWAT) team and Beloit Paramedic TEMS (Tactical Medic) team.

The facility for military and civilian fire and police training at Volk Field is amazing. The team used the high risk search area, and as you see in the photos above, used explosive breaches of doors and windows. The medics were used in multiple scenarios to rescue downed/injured officers and to provide care for wounded suspects and hostages.

Word of wisdom - if these guys come knocking, open the door or they will blow your house down!

Sox Game Pics

I had a great wedding on Saturday September 5th with some phenomenal images. I was showing one of my sunset (you'll see them in a post in a couple of weeks) images to a bridesmaid and her friend said, "Wow! I'm getting married in a month and if my photographer doesn't get photos like that I'll kill him".....I did tell her that she should have booked me and she would be sure to be happy with the photos.

Anyway - I took Sunday as a day of rest....and by rest I mean my friends Jeremy, Dave and Kevin went to the south side of Chicago to see the Bo-Sox against my White Sox.

I LOVE baseball, it yells "summer" at you - the sights, the sounds, the smells of the ballpark. Mmmmm - awesome. I posted a couple of pics for you to see....and for those paying attention my White Sox did drop that game (the only one they lost in the freakin' 4 game set) 1-6 to Boston. But! A bad day at the ballpark is still better than a good day working :-)

Amanda Jo - Class of 2010

Amanda Jo is a senior at Janesville Parker High School in Janesville. Amanda Jo wanted indoor and outdoor sessions, a bunch of prints and wallets and the personalized press printed 7x7 hard cover coffee table proof book. I sent her the package price and we set a date. We had wonderful weather and managed all the outfit changes in about 3 hours. The sky was cloudy but the rain held for the outdoor photos.

Amanda Jo is a cheerleader (4 years) for a pretty good Parker football team. She also cheers for a club/private cheer team in Delavan. Amanda Jo will be attending college (still to be determined) next year for high school education - yes I asked if she had considered how she treats her high school teachers and she just giggled. I guess she knows what she has coming then.
